Nov 23,  · Hugh describes this as 1/3 dystopia, 1/3 romance, 1/3 environmental mystery. One of my personal barometers of an excellent writer is the ability to write in mutiple genres and Hugh certainly proves that ability in The Shell Collector. I finished this book with tears in my eyes. My biggest complaint would be that I wanted MORE/5. The Shell Collector: Stories. Anthony Doerr Feb Sold by Simon and Schuster. Buy as Gift. The “perilously beautiful” (Boston Globe) first story collection by the author of the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning #1 New York Times bestseller All The Light We Cannot See and Cloud Cuckoo Land.4/5(35). Jan 14,  · Morrison’s truly majestic fifth novel—strong and intricate in craft; devastating in impact. Set in post-Civil War Ohio, this is the story of how former slaves, psychically crippled by years of outrage to their bodies and their humanity, attempt to “beat back the past,” while the ghosts and wounds of that past ravage the present.

Thirteen-year-old Anna, an orphan, lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople in a house of women who make their living embroidering the robes of priests. Restless, insatiably curious, Anna learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds a book, the story of Aethon, who longs to be turned into a bird so that he can fly to a utopian paradise in the sky.

This she reads to her ailing sister as the walls of the only place she has known are bombarded in the great siege of Constantinople. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, miles from home, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the invading army. Tucked among the library shelves is a bomb, planted by a troubled, idealistic teenager, Seymour. This is another siege. And in a not-so-distant future, on the interstellar ship Argos, Konstance is alone in a vault, copying on scraps of sacking the story of Aethon, told to her by her father.

She has never set foot on our planet. Their lives are gloriously intertwined. This marvelous book is like an astrolabe or an armillary sphere; a navigation instrument engineered to discover the world. In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance.

Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Reviews Review policy and info. Published on. Flowing text. Best for. Web, Tablet, Phone, eReader. Content protection. Learn more.
