Verified Purchase. This is my 3rd or 4th time reading this series over the last couple of years. Some people might consider this extreme. I consider it an outstanding privileges to be so entertained each and every time.
I usually don’t indulge in reading anything more than once but, this series is an exception to any rule. The characters never seem to bore me but, just the opposite, I discover new things about them I might have missed during the previous visits through the pages that somehow keep me coming back. I do and have recommended this series to anyone looking for an adventure among the mystical and mythical monsters, heroes and villains these books so vividly have to offer.
I can’t be sure I’d read them a fifth time but, then again, I wouldn’t bet a penny I wouldn’t. Thanks again for the great story telling! Girl gets boy.
Girl loses Boy. As this series progresses, I like each book a little less than the one before. She enjoys his company and her time among the Quileutes. Then suddenly, we are told in Chapter 26 that she is actually in love with Jacob and tempted by the life he offers her.
This revelation might have been more believable if we had indications that Bella saw qualities in Jacob that Edward lacked, or that a mortal life was starting to appeal to her. My sympathy toward Bella disappeared with each choice she made to run off to Jacob and allow physical intimacies more appropriate for sweethearts than best friends. It just encouraged him to keep thinking that if he waited long enough, Bella would choose him. As it was, I found his cockiness off-putting and absolutely despised him for forcing himself on Bella in a sickening scene.
Edward alone redeemed himself from the unsavory turn his character had taken by giving up trying to dictate terms to Bella and instead considering her happiness. In spite of disliking how the characters behaved in this book, I still found parts I enjoyed.
Humor was sprinkled throughout, which helped tremendously with finishing the story, and the plotline with Victoria and the newborn army was riveting. Having decided to join the Cullens as a vampire after graduation, Bella spends her remaining time worrying about the transition, fretting about hurting Jacob, and negotiating terms with Edward — until looming danger brings everything to a head.
Notes from March Plot and Setting: 3. It’s definitely my least favorite in the series. It’s also maybe the least stand-alone of the series, starting where the previous one left off, and ending with so much unresolved. Characters: 4 — I enjoyed the backstory we get on Rosalie and Jasper, and the introduction of more of the wolves and their mates. We do see some positive qualities in Bella, Edward, and Jacob, but also: So. They are all, at times, selfish, controlling, and manipulative.
Jacob especially irks me in this one. I feel for him, but he sure plays Bella like a fiddle, and it only causes more emotional pain for all three of them. Mechanics and Writing: 4. Redeeming Value: 3 — While there’s still no sex scenes or extremely explicit language, the physicality definitely increases: Bella tries to seduce Edward though he insists on waiting for marriage , and Jacob manipulates Bella into kissing him fairly passionately, too.
Violence has a larger role and is described in more gruesome detail. I did appreciate the recurring theme of compromise and cooperation, especially Bella’s concern for both vampires and wolves, and her attempts to make peace between them.
Personal Enjoyment: 4. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This was hard work to read. It felt like the book dragged on for ages, gave us some really quick action, then ended. The best part about this book was the ending, and not just because it ceased Bella’s monotonous internal monologue, but because we had a chapter from Jacob’s point of view.
Perhaps the most engaging thing I’ve read in all 3 books to date. One of the most disturbing things about this book had to be when Bella begged him for intimate relations. This guy must be the hero of all men to get an 18 year virgin to beg him for that not saying the word in case amazon bans the review. It’s just another level to his deep manipulation and abusive nature. I can’t connect with Bella and I really don’t like Edward.
He’s not noble at all. An excellent book. Bella is still in danger from vampires and there are confusing thoughts to work out. Should she stay with Jacob and remain human or go back to Edward whom she loves so deeply? Then there are those vampires trying to kill her and the Cullens.
